About the Founder & CEO

As a young man growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, I knew that working with kids in some capacity was in my future. My mother operated a child development center from home and I was her personal assistant. After completing my college education, I departed Tallahassee in 1983 in pursuit of a military career that spanned 21 years.

While serving in the military I always enjoyed working with kids whether it was coaching a sport, teaching Sunday School, or participating in a mentorship program. The military brought me to Charlotte in 1999 for a two-year tour of duty… Read More

Our Mission

To empower youth and adults economically, from low income communities by teaching and stressing the life long importance of financial literacy.

Investopedia defines financial literacy as follows: Financial literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use knowledge, behavior modification and various financial skills including personal financial management, budgeting, investing and insurance.

Our Vision

  • To create awareness and educate individuals on the importance of financial literacy, therefore making informed, thoughtful and beneficial financial decisions.
  • To teach financial literacy as a critical life skill.
  • To introduce topics such as generational wealth, closing the wealth gap, entrepreneurship and other money management concepts.

Our Values

Partnership

  • We seek collaboration and involvement in our work
  • We desire engagement with others that share our vision
  • We value honesty and integrity in our relationships

Impact

  • We are driven to make a positive difference in communities and society
  • We evaluate our success based on the programs we provide and how many lives we are able to touch
  • We strive for continuous improvement in all that we do

Compassion

  • We believe we are indebted to our communities, to our youth and to our historic institutions and organizations
  • We are passionate about giving back to those in need in our communities
  • We believe that actions speak louder than words and service is the best way to express gratitude

Our Philosophy

Our Philosophy is based on a concept of skill analysis. Skill analysis is comprised of two components, hard skills and soft skills.

Hard skills are defined as:
-Developing a budget
-Improving your credit score
-Saving and investing

Soft skills are defined as:
-Behavioral modification
-Changing habits
-Thinking differently about money and finances

Teach an individual hard skills and you may achieve temporary financial literacy. Teach an individual soft skills in conjunction with hard skills and life long financial literacy is achievable.

Crystal L. Screen

Born and raised in New York, I spent my formative years in North Carolina every summer.  I thought it only fitting that I make North Carolina my home after 20 years of Civil Service employment.  During those 20 years, I served the citizens of New York City in many capacities. I was an instructor and program content developer for a large civil service organization.  In  addition, I served a fraternal organization as their recording secretary and financial secretary. I most recently retired from the Aviation field as the Customer Service Training Manager for one of the airlines here in Charlotte.

I spend my time serving the citizens of Charlotte through volunteerism. I enjoy cooking, traveling and learning new things everyday. My favorite two quotes are:

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest” – Benjamin Franklin

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” -Malcolm X

The military brought me to Charlotte in 1999 for a two-year tour of duty. I immediately fell in love with Charlotte because it reminded me of Tallahassee. I knew that I would return here after I completed my obligation to the military. I returned to Charlotte in April of 2003 to prepare for retirement and to pursue a dream of starting a small business. Since retiring from the US Army in October of 2003, I have worked in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system as a substitute teacher and at Back Creek Christian Academy as a volunteer, substitute teacher, and physical education instructor.

I launch my first entrepreneurship project at the age of 9 selling TV Guide Magazines from door to door. Other projects included a paper route, selling t-shirts and managing my own band. My biggest success to date has been a children’s transportation shuttle company called Totz-N-Teenz on Wheelz.

Over my life time of producing successful small business ventures, I developed a passion for financial literacy. Learning different money concept such as budgeting, income versus expense, investing and credit utilization were all fundamental to operating successful businesses. Additionally, financial literacy is just as important in our personal lives as well. It’s one of the few life topics along with education and health that impacts us either positively or negatively from the cradle to the grave. We must all realize and understand the importance of learning and teaching financial literacy early and throughout our life cycle and it’s potential impact.

Lastly, as we began to unpack the subject of financial literacy, let us also embark on the possibilities of closing the wealth gap with an eye towards generational wealth as the future end goal.
